Señora Ma Socorro’s Weather Proofing

In the heart of the Burnham Park Neighborhood, where modest homes stand as quiet witnesses to decades of family memories, Señora Ma Socorro has long been a steady presence. A proud MKE BB homeowner, her house has sheltered years of laughter, resilience, and perseverance. But by late 2025, it was clear the home that had protected her for so long needed protection of its own.

Her case reached Revitalize Milwaukee late in the 2025. The signs were concerning: a history of persistent leaks and visible evidence suggesting multiple roofing layers that could be compromising the structure beneath.

Then came January’s Polar Vortex.

The deep freeze stalled roofing operations across the city. With temperatures too low for proper shingle sealing and safe installation, weather became the single greatest obstacle. Only two roofs could be completed that month. We waited, watching forecasts and hoping for a break.

Finally, in the second week of February, temperatures rose just enough to resume work. From February 11th through the 13th, crews arrived to begin the long-awaited transformation.

The tear-off revealed what we had feared and more. Three layers of asphalt shingles had been stacked over the original cedar shake roof. The weight and age of these materials had been silently straining the structure for years. Beneath it all, the original framework had endured, but just barely.

During demolition, another issue surfaced: an aging chimney showing signs of deterioration. Because it remains an active part of the home’s heating system, preservation was critical. Our Contractor was authorized to tuckpoint and install proper flashing, reinforcing and sealing the chimney to protect it from further water intrusion while maintaining its function.

Piece by piece, the old gave way to the new.

By mid-February, Señora’s home stood renewed complete with a new roof and gutters, built to withstand Milwaukee’s toughest seasons. The work was completed under Skyline as contractor of record, but the impact reached further than construction alone.

This project was made possible through the partnership and support of The Zilber Family Foundation, whose investment in neighborhood stability continues to strengthen communities like Burnham Park.

Now, when the winds sweep across the South Side or spring rains begin to fall, she can rest easier. Her home the place that has held her story for so many years will remain secure and leak-free for the foreseeable future.

And in a neighborhood built on endurance and pride, that kind of protection means everything.
